The following terms are commonly heard for things we use in our lives today. Once upon a time, though, these same terms were used to describe something else entirely. For example:

CD: Grades parents never wanted to see on a report card.

Remote: A location far away from everything.

Hard drive: Taking the license exam at age 15.

Mouse: Something the cat brought home.

Web site: Where a spider lived.

Ram: An animal with curly horns.

Megabyte: How one ate a thick sandwich.

Megahertz: What a boxer had after fighting the champ.

Cell phone: Something found in a jail or prison.

Beeper: Impatient driver.

Call screening: “Who is this?”

Caller ID: What followed call screening.

Call forwarding: “Hey Dad! Phone!”

Air bag: A person who would not stop talking. (Or was that a windbag?)

Insufficient memory: An excuse for forgetting the wife’s birthday.
