S.P. Leary, 67, legendary blues drummer known around the world for his vigorous backbeat, died Monday in Trinity Hospital of cancer. Mr. Leary began playing the drums when he was 14 years old. He has toured with blues greats such as T-Bone Walker, Jimmy Rogers and Howlin’ Wolf in Chicago. In 1966, Mr. Leary was playing regularly with harmonica giant James Cotton before taking the drummer’s seat for Muddy Waters, which lasted until 1969. Mr. Leary is survived by his wife, Annette; and three sisters. Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Friday and from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday in Cage Memorial Chapel, 7651 S. Jeffrey Blvd. Services will follow visitation at 11 a.m. Saturday in the funeral home.
