At a blackjack table at the Blue Chip Casino in Michigan City, Ind., the following conversation took place the day before Christmas.

Bearded man in his 50s, betting about $25 a hand: “All I need is to win $200 more and I’ll buy my wife a stove.”

Blond woman in her 20s, betting about $5 a hand: “I want to win enough to buy my husband a nice sweater.”

Man: “You should shoot higher. You should try for enough for two sweaters. Maybe a suit.”

Woman: “But it’s hard to win and besides, I don’t even feel right doing this so close to Christmas. What would Jesus think of people gambling the night before his birthday?”

Man: “He’d probably be smart enough not to play.”
