In the Feb. 6 story “Winfrey admits mistakes” (Business), Oprah Winfrey is quoted as saying, in response to comments on her accuracy in past shows: “We do thousands of shows, and every time the system has worked. This is the first time it didn’t work for us.”

Wasn’t it Oprah who said in a 1987 show, “Hello, everybody. AIDS has both sexes running scared. Research studies now project that one in five–listen to me, hard to believe–one if five heterosexuals could be dead from AIDS at the end of the next three years. That’s by 1990. One in five. It is no longer just a gay disease. Believe me.”

Like mad cow disease spreading in the U.S., this predicted spread of AIDS never happened. I think the issue in this case is responsibility.
