In desperation, for the fourth time or so, I write to the Tribune in an appeal to please not call interpreters “translators”!
Once again, a Tribune writer, this time Jose Patino Girona, in a Jan. 26 Metro article headlined “Russian citizens try democracy’s promise,” twice refers to interpretation as “translation” and interpreters as “translators.”
Translation is a written process, and if, as in the article, someone stands on stage and renders a speaker’s words into a foreign language, that is interpretation (a spoken process).
