Let’s first state the obvious: For spring 1998, many of the looks mirror what you already have–sensible pantsuits, dress suits, long skirts, short skirts. You get the picture. These are reliable, recyclable clothes. So build on them.

In this issue, you will see that designers this season also are downright passionate about feminine dressing, in two distinct ways. In one, clothes are embellished, made special and precious with touches of lace, beading, muted sequins, gentle ruching, floral appliques. For day and evening. Very pretty.

Contrasting that look is minimalism, especially in dresses, done simply, refined, not as raw as before. Body enhancing.

Makeup this spring exists in parallel worlds: clean and fresh with a bit of shimmer, or definite and stronger with a continued accent on lips. You’ll want to try both.

On the accessory front: The timing is right for watches of stainless steel. And jeans, long a staple of the American wardrobe, are hot again for spring. The women featured here believe that’s pretty cool.
