Laura G. Lewandowski, 95, formerly of Wheeling, a longtime seamstress and clothing designer, died Friday in a nursing home near Silverdale, Wash. Mrs. Lewandowski was born in Poland and came to Chicago as a baby. Her mother died when she was a teenager and she helped her father raise her siblings. Mrs. Lewandowski was a self-taught seamstress who worked for many companies in Chicago. She made wedding gowns and sewed samples for salespeople to show to retail stores. Later, she worked for a company that made children’s clothing. After Mrs. Lewandowski retired, she taught others to sew. She lived in Wheeling for about 25 years, where she was involved in area senior centers. Two years ago, Mrs. Lewandowski moved to Silverdale, Wash. She is survived by a son, Richard Lewis; a daughter, Dolores Wyzgala; a sister; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. A visitation will be held from 4 to 9 p.m. Monday at Kolssak Funeral Home, 189 S. Milwaukee Ave., Wheeling. Services will be at 9 a.m. Tuesday in Kolssak Funeral Home, followed by mass at 9:30 a.m. in St. Joseph the Worker Church, 181 W. Dundee Rd., Wheeling.
