The article by Ellen Warren (“Death is a matter of course at this funeral home,” Tempo, Feb. 27) about the miniature golf course at the Ahlgrim & Sons funeral home in Palatine brought back many happy memories of my childhood in the Austin neighborhood of Chicago.
In the mid 1920s my parents and I lived on Waller Avenue near Division Street where, I believe, the original Ahlgrim and Sons funeral home was located. Alongside that funeral home was a vacant lot where Mr. Ahlgrim allowed the neighborhood kids to have a baseball field in the summer. He had the lot flooded in the winter for ice skating and hockey.
We had an agreement that the lot would not be used at the time of a funeral, and it never was.
