An Aurora City Council committee this week recommended a program to help residents prevent sewage backup in their homes, and the full council on Tuesday slated it for routine approval next week.
Under the program, as amended by the council, the city would pay half the cost of installing devices–with maximum allocations per home of $1,000–to prevent sewage from backing up, said Environment and Water Quality Chairwoman Tess Wackerlin.
Devices that would prevent backups include standpipes, overhead plumbing, flapper valves and other plumbing contraptions, she said. They often are needed in areas where sanitary and storm-water sewers have not been separated and sometimes in areas where they have, she added.
For 1998, the city has allocated $75,000 for the program, Wackerlin said.
