Leaders of St. Anne’s Catholic Church are asking the Barrington Village Board for approval of a large-scale expansion.

The 10,000-member congregation, 120 N. Ela St., proposes a $12 million expansion that would include a new 1,300-seat church, a gathering/parish resource center, gymnasium and reconfigured school facilities.

The parish community has more than tripled since 1970, according to Joseph Kelsch, St. Anne’s director of development and operations.

The bulk of St. Anne’s parishioners attend weekend masses in a gymnasium because of inadequate seating, he said.

“We simply need space for a number of ministries,” Kelsch said, “most notably a youth center and senior citizen facilities.”

The Village Board likely will vote on the project, which has been endorsed by the Plan Commission, Appearance Review Commission and Zoning Board of Appeals, at its Monday meeting, said Village Manager Robert Irvin.
