Talk about drowning in your own crime wave.

If two burglary suspects in Buffalo hadn’t made a splash, police might have overlooked something fishy in a basement. After realizing the two were submerged in waist-high flood water, police waited for the inevitable.

“They couldn’t hold their breath any longer, and they came up,” Officer Martin Forero said.

Police said Daryl Watt and David Nelson tried to steal copper plumbing from the basement of a house but forgot to turn off the water. Both were charged with burglary, possession of burglary tools and criminal mischief.

“They wound up causing about $5,000 damage for a lousy $50 in copper,” Forero said. “About the only smart thing they did was turn off the electricity before starting.”

Nelson, who lives next door, received the biggest shock. It turns out the initial call to police came from his wife, who heard someone breaking into the house.
