Your March 4 editorial endorsing my opponent in the Democratic primary for Cook County Board president misses the key point in this race. The differences between my “governing style” and John Stroger’s are critical, and they explain why I’m running for this office. I believe it’s absolutely necessary to change the way Cook County is governed.
County officials should scrupulously avoid either the appearance or the reality of financial gain from public service. County officials should not bestow publicly financed favors upon campaign contributors. County officials should spend tax money wisely, because all residents are counting on them.
My opponent has shown, through the “stumbles” and mistakes you cite in your editorial, that he does not subscribe to these principles. His attempt to rush the real estate transfer tax through, with inadequate public input, shows that. His misguided opening of a single bid for the construction of Cook County Hospital, $40 million over budget, shows that.
The taxpayers of Cook County would be better served by a president who does not award lucrative contracts to his campaign contributors. The voters of Cook County would be better served by a president who encourages open, honest and responsible government.
