I was dismayed at the insensitive way the Alonzo Spellman episode was covered locally. In particular, sports talk show hosts showed an utter disregard for an individual in crisis. What these broadcasters also revealed was ignorance of mental health issues. Their trite comments, ridicule and judgments were offensive. What is really needed at times like this are understanding, acceptance and support.
Mike Singletary has shown that he has more class than any other athlete in our great city. Get better, Alonzo. I hope you find success in a kinder, gentler city.
