Many Chicago-area apartment-community managers report that they inform prospective renters of the application criteria they use in the approval process.
If management doesn’t volunteer that information, renters should ask what criteria will be used to guide the decision, according to realty experts.
The documentation and personal information most commonly required during the application process include the following:
Photo ID. In many cases, said apartment property managers, units cannot even be shown without a prospective renter supplying photo identification.
Rental history. Would-be renters must supply names and addresses of former landlords.
Income. Many apartment properties obtain written verification from the applicant’s employer that he or she earns a monthly income at least approximately three times the cost of rent.
Paycheck stubs. If income can’t be verified, paycheck stubs may be required as proof of sufficient income.
Social Security number. Required to undertake a credit check.
