Gene Hughes, 58, a Westmont resident and Hinsdale real estate broker for 20 years, died Saturday from cancer in Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Medical Center. A graduate of Chaminade College Preparatory School in St. Louis, Mr. Hughes was a well-known prep athlete who was named a First Team All-Catholic League player in football, basketball and baseball during his senior year. He also spent many years coaching various west suburban youth sports programs, including Little League and junior soccer teams. Mr. Hughes studied at the University of Notre Dame and received his bachelor’s degree from Southern Illinois University. His older brother, Jack, said he had an uncommon sense of virtue and fair play. “He had a very quiet dignity about him,” he said. His twin brother, Jerry, said, “He was the nicest man I’ve ever met.” Survivors also include a son, Gene Jr.; four daughters, Stephanie Worobey, Penelope Beckhardt, Kerry and Heather; two grandchildren; and two sisters, Mary Enright and Nancy Murakami. Funeral services will take place at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Old St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, 700 W. Adams St.
