Donald Lawrence, 75, owner of The Goldsmith Ltd. jewelry store on the second level of Water Tower Place in Chicago, died Monday in the Lake Shore Rehabilitation Center in Chicago of complications from Alzheimer’s disease. A native of Chicago’s Northwest Side, Mr. Lawrence opened his first jewelry store 45 years ago. After Water Tower was built, he opened the Goldsmith in 1976 and remained its co-owner until his health began to fail several years ago. Mr. Lawrence was known for his original designs, and he often worked for celebrities, such as Sylvester Stallone and Henny Youngman. “A lot of his designs were just very flamboyant and unique, the kind of things that said you won’t run with the rest of the buffalo,” said Sherry Bender, the store’s co-owner. Mr. Lawrence is survived by his wife, Rita, two daughters, Nancy Hallam and Margie Lawrence; and one granddaughter. Funeral services were held in Chicago.
