India is the largest democracy in the world, and more than 600 million people participated in recent elections. But I have seen the Bharatiya Janata Party repeatedly dubbed the Hindu Party. It incorporates more features of Hinduism than any other major Indian party, but it is not a Hindu Party. It has members of every religion in its fold.
One does not want the news media to reduce other countries, parties and people to stereotypical caricatures. This partly explains why U.S. citizens are so poorly informed about the rest of the world. Using the same logic, the Republican Party as it stands today is a white, Christian party, but rarely do we address it as such.
