James E. O’Heir, 90, a retired lieutenant who worked for the Chicago Police Department for 33 years, died Saturday in Palos Community Hospital. Born and raised in Chicago, Lt. O’Heir lived in the city most of his life. He had been a resident of Frankfort since 1980. He joined the Chicago Police Department during the Depression because it offered a secure job during uncertain times, recalled his daughter, Patricia O’Heir. But he enjoyed the work and stayed until 1961. His family remembered him as a “great gentleman” who was an avid golfer. In addition to his daughter, Patricia, he is survived by another daughter, Virginia; four sons James, Richard, Robert and William; two sisters, Mary Louise O’Heir and Eleanor O’Toole; 25 grandchildren; and 37 great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be held at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday in Thornridge Funeral Home, 14318 S. La Grange Rd., Orland Park, followed by mass at 10:30 a.m. in St. Christina Church, 111th Street and Christiana Avenue, Chicago.
