The U.S. hog herd expanded 8 percent during the past year, the Department of Agriculture said, a sign record pork supplies and low prices for consumers are ahead. There were 60.07 million hogs and pigs on the nation’s farms on March 1, up from 55.84 million a year earlier, the USDA said in a report. The number of hogs now being fed for slaughter, a barometer of spring pork supplies, is 53.084 million head, up 8 percent from a year ago, the USDA said.
