The Tribune’s lead story March 25 was the senseless and tragic deaths of four children and a teacher in Jonesboro, Ark., after they’d been shot by two boys, 11 and 13. That same day, your outdoors writer, John Husar, was relating with great pride the joys of teaching his two grandsons, 7 and 9, to be good marksmen. As the two youngsters were busy “killing” imaginary rabbits, squirrels and turkeys, Mr. Husar was contemplating how to make the boys better shots. While I support Mr. Husar’s rights to his opinions, I can only imagine that somewhere in Jonesboro some father or grandfather is now wondering about the wisdom of teaching children to be such good marksmen.
I also question the Tribune’s timing in running the article that day. I would think that common sense and decency would have dictated printing Mr. Husar’s column on a different day.
