Dr. David Karger, 75, a Chicago physician for more than 40 years and a Lincolnwood resident, died Tuesday in the Hospice of the North Shore in Evanston. Born in Poland in 1922, Dr. Karger escaped his Nazi-invaded homeland in the summer of 1939, taking refuge in Honduras, Panama and, finally, the Dominican Republic. There, he studied and later practiced medicine before heading to New York, where he completed his U.S. medical training. Wanting to chart new territory, Dr. Karger, along with his wife, Belle, came to Chicago in 1958, where he treated generations of West Side residents at the old Roosevelt Hospital and later at Mt. Sinai Hospital. Besides his wife, survivors include two daughters, Sue-Ann Rosen and Jane Klein; a son, Don; a sister, Amalia Ottemberg; and seven grandchildren. Services were held last week.
