The article on the future of Hollywood after “Titanic” (Arts & Entertainment, March 22) asks why the Oscars’ Best Song category is “so lame.” I agree it’s all about Top 40 hits, which is wrong. The Academy and its music branch need to take into consideration the place of a nominated song in the film.
I like the song from “Titanic,” but it has nothing to do with the movie. Neither do the songs from “Good Will Hunting” or “Con Air.” I would have replaced them with “A Far, Far Better Thing” from that awful film “A Simple Wish”; Kevin Bacon’s song he wrote “Medium Rare” from “Telling Lies in America”; and the delightfully bad “Feel the Heat” from “Boogie Nights.”
All three of these songs had an integral part in these films. Until the Academy chooses to recognize this as a reason to give an Oscar, they should drop this category.
