Bernice M. Smith, 86, a longtime resident of Des Plaines, died March 5 at her home in Tualatim, Ore. Mrs. Smith had lived in Des Plaines for 33 years. She moved to Oregon in 1990 after the death of her husband, Byron. Survivors include two daughters, Sharon Bell and LaVon Friedman; a son, Byron Jr.; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Services were held March 16.
