Mildred Mallin, 83, who as a young girl was known as “Millie the Matzoh Queen,” died Friday in Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Her family owned the Wittenberg Matzoh Co., which baked Eat More Matzoh. Mrs. Mallin received the nickname because her Jewish name was Malka, which means Queen, and a picture of her working in the Matzoh factory often appeared in the newspaper during Passover. She married her high school sweetheart, Sam. Together, they ran a Florsheim shoe store at 63rd and Halsted Streets. Mrs. Mallin came up with the idea of adding other men’s clothing and turning the store into a men’s boutique. The innovation helped make the store one of the most popular in Chicago, family members recalled. She was a life member of the Women’s American Organization for Rehabilitation through Training, and past president of its Water Tower chapter.”I think the thing people would remember about her is she was an extremely charitable person. She was always thinking of others instead of herself,” her son, Ira Mallin, said. Other survivors include a daughter, Sharon Green-Berg, and a granddaughter. Serviceswill be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Weinstein Family Services Devon Chapel, 1300 W. Devon Ave., Chicago.
