Jesse Davis: First Insight (Concord Jazz)
In his most impressive recording to date, alto saxophonist Jesse Davis proves equally convincing as composer, soloist and bandleader. Though the man’s searing, blues-drenched playing alone would recommend “First Insight,” the stylistic variety of the compositions and the ingenuity of Davis’ arrangements make this recording a tour de force. To his credit, Davis has enlisted the support of first-rate collaborators: guitarist Peter Bernstein, pianist Mulgrew Miller, bassist Ron Carter and drummer Kenny Washington. All work to support Davis’ vision of a music that is rhythmically aggressive, melodically unpredictable and musically soulful throughout.
