When the Woolworth’s stores declared bankruptcy and shut down, the media made it sound as if all we were losing was a fond memory, and ignored the very real problem of fewer low-cost variety stores in urban areas. Where else can you buy knitting needles, lawn furniture and pet food under one roof?

Wal-Mart and Target don’t seem too eager to open outlets within the city limits, and not everyone can jump in a car and drive 30 miles to the suburbs or load their purchases into a car.
