Rev. John Gartner, former pastor at Notre Dame Church on the Near West Side, died Monday at Regina Health Center in Richfield, Ohio after years of battling progressive supranuclear palsy. Father Gartner was born in Germany, moved with his family to Chicago at age 3 and was ordained into the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament. He served in various roles for the order in Australia, Ireland, New York City and Albuquerque, N.M. He was also a former chaplain at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Chicago. Survivors include two sisters, Elizabeth Shields and Marie Smith. Mass for Father Gartner was said Friday.
