Michael Weiss Quartet: Power Station (DIW)
Anyone who has heard pianist Michael Weiss backing saxophonist Johnny Griffin already knows about the man’s fluidity and intelligence as an improviser. In his newest release as bandleader, Weiss reaffirms his status as one of the more dynamic young pianists in jazz. The brightness of his touch and the blues quality of much of his harmonic vocabulary recommend this recording, as do the hard-driving and earthy solos of tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander. With bassist John Webber and drummer Joe Farnswroth, Weiss leads a quartet brimming over with confidence and optimism.
