I must compliment John Husar on his excellent article “Cook County missing forest through trees” (Sports, April 12).
Persuasive and passionate, it boosts the spirits of the many restoration volunteers who had worked to make native species, like the bobwhite quail, welcome again. His thorough refuting of the arguments behind the bile of many restoration opponents is a compelling call to County Board President John Stroger to restart restoration throughout Chicago’s publicly held lands.
There is no doubt that humans have caused unimaginable suffering and death in God’s creation. But should a driver who accidentally hits a pedestrian forswear any further use of his car even if that means not taking the injured person to the hospital? Of course not, but this is in essence what a myopic minority have forced on the rest of us in Cook County. Husar rightly recognizes that careful tending of our remaining natural lands is not only needed but our responsibility.
By giving articles on architecture front page attention in various sections, the Tribune rightly focuses on the importance of the environment we build around us. You should give the same priority to the environment around us we did not create.
