The April 20 cartoon today was a real “grabber”–the old coot sitting on the stern of the Good Ship Social Security as it sank into the briny deep. With his cane held high, he yells through a toothless mouth, “I’m king o’ the world.” Senility is written all over his face, and “AARP” is stenciled across his chest.

I’m sure someone in the editor’s chair ran the cartoon to make a point. What was the point? Everyone over 65 is senile? Everyone over 65 is toothless? Everyone over 65 is an old coot? Everyone over 65 thinks he is king of the world? Everyone over 65 needs a cane? Everyone over 65 glories in the Social Security “windfall”?

Maybe because I am over 65, I failed to see any cleverness or even any point in the cartoon. What came across was a mean-spirited swipe at anyone old enough to receive Social Security. If I am wrong, please enlighten me.
