A building code change that would make it easier to convert old manufacturing and office properties to residential use was advanced Friday by a City Council committee.

Under the measure, apartments in the buildings could have a “multipurpose room” without a source of exterior light or ventilation. The current code essentially requires that every major room in a residence have a window.

Under the change, a multipurpose room could not be used as a bedroom.
