You are right to credit President Clinton for his initiatives in the Irish peace process (“Clinton’s role in Ulster’s peace,” Editorial, April 20).

In contrast, his predecessor, Ronald Reagan, had a perfect opportunity to speak to Irish peace in 1984 with the release of the new Ireland Forum report. Instead he said nothing as his soulmate, Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, derisively dismissed the report’s conclusions at a press conference.

That report offered three options: a united Ireland; a federated Ireland of provinces; and a joint sovereignty, not unlike the idea contained in the latest peace agreement. One wonders how many lives would have been spared if there had been any American interest or leadership then such as has been shown now by this president.

Even if this agreement is not all it is hyped to be, America should stay engaged and see the job through!
