On the South Side of the city, in an area of neat lawns and cozy homes, there was to be seen for a couple of weeks in the middle of April a most unusual sight: a large tree and house decorated with tiny lights in the shape of eggs and a yard filled with plastic bunny rabbits.

The couple who own this house would not divulge their names or their address, but did talk.

“It started last year as something nice for the neighborhood kids at Easter,” said the husband, a 57-year-old commercial lighting salesman. “Sort of like Christmas in springtime.”

Indeed, Easter is becoming nearly as showy a holiday as Christmas, with an increasing availability of all manner of holiday-related gifts and decorative items, from plastic eggs with which to decorate trees to greeting cards to, ahem and for real, chocolate crucifixes.

While some decry what they call this “commercialization of Easter,” others greatly enjoy it. Take for instance the tall fellow who, a few weeks ago, was wearing a bunny suit as he was walking down Roscoe Street.

“I’m going to an Easter Eve party,” he said. “Last year I went as an egg.”
