I am writing to express my anger and outrage at the illustration of an African-American man for the “Ever-ready rage” feature (Page 1 and Tempo). Such portrayals, reminiscent of the darkening of O.J. Simpson’s face on a Time magazine cover, perpetrate stereotypes of black men as dangerous and menacing–a cauldron of violence and temper ready to boil over at any moment.

Further, the illustration is an expression of how racism permeates every aspect of our society–and which responsible news media must be vigilant to detect and avoid.

Tribune editors owe our entire community an apology for this outrageous slur.
