I am reading, with increasing frequency, stories about people trying to get Fidel Castro to change his government to a more democratic system.
Mr. Castro will not bend to outside forces to change the communist system he helped put in place decades ago. What is needed is a gentle nudge in the right direction. The United States can help in that effort.
First: Return Guantanamo Bay Naval Station to Cuba.
Second: Lift the trade embargo.
Third: Establish diplomatic relations with Cuba and embrace them back into the fold of the Americas.
These three steps will most certainly bring the present communist system of government to its knees by the Cuban people themselves. Remove the United States as “the mortal enemy” and become a friendly neighbor, and Cuba will slowly adopt democratic reforms–she will be forced to, just as Russia has. Mr Castro will no longer have the U.S. as a threat to justify his positions.
