Regarding the efforts to block a makeshift memorial for two teenagers who committed suicide near Mokena Elementary School (Metro, April 29), Pat Chesla, assistant superintendent of Mokena School District 159, states, “It would be a different story if it were some horrible tragedy.”
Perhaps Chesla should look at the face of Patty Dunkel, the mother of one of the victims, and repeat those words. To the families involved, it is a horrible tragedy to lose their children to an unexplained suicide. Chesla’s comment that the suicides are not considered to be tragedies is unfeeling at best and an unnecessary extra burden on the grieving families.
