Regarding John Kass’ idea (Main news, May 4) that we should honor Michael Jordan by renaming Lake Shore Drive after him: Absolutely not.
Don’t misunderstand me–like all of Chicago and most of the free world, I, too, believe that Michael is the greatest athlete now living, and what he has brought to Chicago in terms of civic pride and economic bounty is immeasurable.
But I think taking the name of our most beautiful highway (which, unlike every other major thoroughfare in this city, is simply–and appropriately–named to reflect what it is) and tossing it aside to further deify this man is ridiculous. Michael Jordan has done much for Chicago, and Chicago has done much for Michael Jordan. I think the scale is pretty evenly balanced.
Look at a city map and try to find a street that isn’t named after a famous person. Maybe Chicago needs to find something more worthwhile than politicians, athletes or celebrities to idolize.
