It appears that the Veterans Administration and Congress are seriously considering closing one of two Veterans Affairs hospitals, Lakeside or West Side (Metro, April 19).
If the Cook County Board insists on squandering money on a new Cook County Hospital, perhaps it ought to negotiate with the Veterans Administration to buy the West Side facility. It is an existing hospital within the medical center complex, immediately available and probably less costly than the $500 million plus that a new hospital would cost. Then too, the money would change from one group of taxpayers to another, with the same group included. Could be a good deal.
