Stephen B. Ulincy, 64, of Rolling Meadows, a retired insurance underwriter who oversaw food service for a local CEDA preschool, died Wednesday in Alexian Brothers Medical Center, Elk Grove Village.
Mr. Ulincy, who was born in Bethlehem, Pa., was drafted into the Army after World War II. He graduated from Lehigh University, Bethlehem, Pa., in 1959, with a bachelor of science degree in business administration.
He was an insurance underwriter for 30 years with Aetna Life and Casualty Co. of Illinois; O’Malley and McKay Inc., Des Plaines; and Mavon Insurance Co., Hinsdale.
After his retirement, Mr. Ulincy in 1993 took charge of the food service at the Community and Economic Development Association’s Head Start preschool program in Arlington Heights.
“He was dependable, reliable, friendly, and had a good sense of humor,” said Laurie Pawelek, center director at CEDA. “He was good with the kids and good with the parents.”
Pawelek said Mr. Ulincy single-handedly operated the food service program and prepared the food for the preschoolers. “He was very organized,” she said. “My kitchen was immaculate.” She said that he enjoyed working with the children because it was so different from his previous career in insurance. “He cared about everything,” Pawelek said.
“He had a lot of spontaneous joy,” said his daughter Kathleen Ulincy. “He had a childlike quality in his approach to life,” she said. “He was a man of simple and hearty faith.”
Other survivors include his wife, Patricia; a son, Joseph; a daughter, Stephanie; two brothers, George Ulincy and Rev. Andrew Ulincy; and four sisters, Sister Mary Bridget, Mary Votral, Marge Maher and Ann Marcincin.
Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Friday in Lauterburg and Oehler Funeral Home, 2000 E. Northwest Highway, Arlington Heights. Mass will be said at 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Colette Catholic Church, 3900 S. Meadow Drive, Rolling Meadows.
