Lombard traffic engineers will study ways to redesign an Illinois Highway 53 intersection that has been the scene of an increasing number of accidents and near-misses.
The Village Board has voted to spend up to $10,000 on the study of Illinois 53 and Meadow Lane. Reported accidents at the intersection have increased from two in 1995 to nine in 1996 and six last year.
The village’s Transportation and Safety Committee found that the increase is likely due to more traffic turning into the recently opened Columbine Glen subdivision and two lanes of traffic from Illinois 53 quickly approaching the intersection with little time to stop for traffic turning left.
Possible solutions, according to the committee, include eliminating one lane of traffic in favor of dedicated left-turn lanes at Meadow, Woodland Avenue and the Columbine Glen entrance.
