Axel Nelson, 93, of The Holmstad in Batavia died Thursday in Delnor-Community Hospital in Geneva. Born in Glava, Sweden, Mr. Nelson moved to the United States and first settled in Chicago. At the age of 88, he retired after more than 40 years of employment at Nelco Metalcraft in Chicago. A skilled patternmaker for cast metal signs, Mr. Nelson’s work can be seen throughout the Chicago area, said his wife, Thelma. Mr. Nelson was a member of the Svithiod Singing Club in Chicago, a group of male Swedish singers founded in 1882. He received recognition from the club for his 45 years of service from 1936 to 1981. He was also a member of the American Union of Swedish Singers and a former member of St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church in Chicago. Other survivors include a son, Alan; a daughter, Margaret; and three grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday in The Holmstad, 700 W. Fabyan Pkwy., Batavia.
