Officials with Joliet Junior College have delayed consideration of a proposal to transfer an adult-education nursing program from Joliet Township High School District 204 to the college.

The college board on Monday tabled the plan that would add the licensed practical nursing program to its program.

John Hertko, the board’s vice president, said he favored the program but wanted further study so a smooth transition can be made.

In March, the high school board voted to discontinue the program, which serves about 50 students this year. If the college accepts the program and state education agencies approve it, classes for LPN students could be offered as soon as 2000, said college president Thomas Gamble.

The high school board voted for the change because of the cost of to the district, and because it feels the students would be better served in a college setting, said Supt. James Clark.

The program has been offered at Joliet Central since the 1970s when the college left the building for a new west side campus.
