Riot police and troops fired warning shots and tear gas at rampaging mobs Wednesday, one day after President Suharto’s security forces killed six student demonstrators. During the pitched street battles, one man was struck and killed by a car. Witnesses said the latest violence broke out after a massive but mostly peaceful memorial service for the dead students at the Trisakti University, the site of Tuesday’s shootings. The melee underscores the resistance to Suharto’s 32-year-old regime as the nation of 200 million residents faces its worst economic crisis in decades. Suharto decided to cut short a visit to Egypt, where he was attending an international conference, because of the unrest, Egyptian officials said on condition of anonymity. He was to return Thursday, a day early. No confirmation was available from Indonesian officials.
