It seems a computer problem that has plagued 24 north and northwest suburban libraries since April 28 is finally coming to an end.

Hardware problems that caused a circulation and inventory crisis have been mostly curtailed, and online catalogs of libraries should be up and running by Friday, officials said at a Cooperative Computer Services executive board meeting Wednesday morning.

The worst-case scenario, loss of all data, will not play out, said Richard Shurman, Cooperative Computer Services administrator. In fact, he said no data loss was expected. “Things are looking pretty good at this point,” Shurman said. “Obviously, pretty good is relative given this is day 16 of down time.”

Among the 24 libraries affected by the computer system problems were those in Des Plaines, Barrington, Wheeling, Park Ridge and Prospect Heights.
