The Woodstock-based School District 200 board has given tentative approval to the idea of developing a joint outdoor athletic facility on school district property behind Westwood School.
A committee of representatives from the school district, the City of Woodstock and Marian Central High School spent the past year weighing potential sites.
The city’s recreation director, Dave Zinnen, and District 200 athletic director Doug Smith leaned toward the Westwood School location and the Raffel Road property, which has been mired in controversy since its purchase.
“The conclusion (of the committee) was that a large complex is needed in the city of Woodstock” with the development and maintenance to be shared by the city and the school district, Smith told the board at its Tuesday meeting.
Board President Brian Gerloff directed Zinnen and Smith to continue exploring the feasibility of the two sites pending the outcome of a community survey to be conducted in the fall with respect to the future of the Raffel Road property.
