Construction on the proposed Metropolis Performing Arts Centre in downtown Arlington Heights could begin as soon as August, if village officials raise the curtain, the project’s developer says.

Speaking at Tuesday’s meeting of the Plat and Subdivision Committee of the Plan Commission, Mark Anderson said the three-building development would bring a theater, stores, a restaurant and 90 apartments to the southeast corner of Vail Avenue and Campbell Street.

Committee members requested both traffic and parking studies from Anderson Investments of Arlington Heights before the proposal moves on to the village Plan Commission.

The proposed theater would offer dramatic performances along with shows by Second City. It would also be available for corporate conferences.

Current plans call for a seating capacity of 286, though Anderson said he expects the final number will be lower.A proposed seven-story residential/retail building would contain 17,000 square feet of first-floor retailing.

“Something like this has been needed down here,” said Jack Groner, of the Plan Commission.
