“Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,
And summer’s lease hath all too short a date.”
— William Shakespeare, from Sonnet 18
So let’s party! Will was right, summer is too short. Let’s enjoy as many diverse, delightful festivals as we can that this great city has to offer. We can pick and choose from the humongous Printer’s Row Book Fair in May to the Old Fashioned Strawberry Festival in June. There’s the Japanese Obon Odori Festival in July, then the annual Bud Billiken Parade and Picnic in August.
This year holds some new greats. Hyatt’s ShakesPIER Festival will feature “Shakespeare’s Greatest Hits” performed by the Shakespeare Repertory Theater on Skyline Stage while Bristol Renaissance Faire’s jugglers, musicians, dancers and actors will be doing their thing June 20 and 21 at Navy Pier, all free of charge. The Old Town School of Folk Music is lining up a first-ever Chicago Folk & Roots Festival to include alternative country, acoustic blues, high-energy bluegrass and more; this event will take place at the vintage Old Town School’s new home on North Lincoln Avenue in July. Enjoy!
