Most metals need to be cleaned regularly so they do not tarnish. Before you begin, determine the type of metal you have — brass, copper, sterling silver, silver plate, etc. — and its age. Antique metals usually require different care than newer items.
This week’s lesson concerns caring for silver and stainless steel. Next week: caring for brass, copper, pewter and other metals.
SILVER: General care: Wash silver regularly in hot water and dishwashing liquid. When necessary, use a commercial silver polish (available at grocery and hardware stores). Clean embossed silver with silver polish applied with a toothbrush. Silver is easily scratched, so never use harsh abrasives.
Dishwashing: Silverware may be washed in the dishwasher but use caution. Do not put hollow-handled silverware in the dishwasher because exposure to heat and detergent may loosen handles. If washing both silver and stainless in the dishwasher, do not put in the same basket. If they touch, a chemical reaction will leave black spots on the silver.
Preventing tarnish: Rubber can corrode silver so do not wear rubber gloves when polishing, do not store silver in containers with rubber seals and never use rubber bands on silver pieces. Food items that tarnish silver include salt, olives, salad dressing, eggs, vinegar and fruit juices. In the case of silverware, wash items immediately after they have been in contact with any of these foods. Flowers can damage silver as they start to decay. If using a silver vase, make sure it has a glass or plastic liner.
Storage: Store silverware in a chest lined with tarnish-resistant flannel. Wrap larger pieces in flannel bags or acid-free tissue
paper.
STAINLESS STEEL: General care: Wash by hand with warm, sudsy water or in the dishwasher. Rinse off acidic or salty foods if items are not washed immediately. Dry stainless steel thoroughly after washing to prevent a white film buildup.
