Regarding the news story on the Philippine presidential election (Main news, May 12):
Filipinos are noted to be the most intense, freedom-loving people in Asia. They, too, have been cited for their respect and belief in the sanctity of the ballot. Election returns are zealously guarded by members of the Commission of Elections (COMELEC), volunteers belonging to the publicly initiated National Movement for Free Elections, the members of the clergy and by the respective supporter of each candidate. The government, through the COMELEC, undertakes several measures and safeguards to assure an honest election.
The May 11 national and local elections reportedly enjoyed an overwhelming voter turnout in the entire country. While the Philippines is addressing the shortcomings of the system, it takes pride in the fact that 80 percent of all registered Filipino voters directly take part in and validate the process, unlike the 20 to 30 percent in Western nations who decide for the rest of the populace.
