William Cahill, 81, a retired Chicago public school teacher and military flight instructor during World War II, died Sunday in Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove. A longtime La Grange Park resident, Mr. Cahill taught in Chicago public schools for 11 years as an industrial arts and machine shop teacher at Westinghouse High School and Washburne Trade School. He retired in 1983. “He found teaching very rewarding and just enjoyed his students very much,” said his daughter, Winnie Brueck. “He just was really an advocate for education and the difference it can make in a person’s life.” In addition to his daughter Winnie, he is survived by another daughter, Kathy Simmons; three sisters, Ruth Hyland, Betty Schuch and Kathleen Barclay; and a brother, John Cahill. Mass will be said at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Francis Xavier Church, 124 N. Spring St., La Grange.
